Socio-economic factors of elderly suicide
Lee So-Chung

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze socio-economic factors of elderly suicide by making multi-national comparative analysis. Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis(FSQCA in short) was conducted on 24 OECD member countries that contained information on major variables of this study such as elderly suicide rate, economic development(GDP), elderly poverty rate, elderly welfare expenditure and life satisfaction score. Major findings of this study could be summarized as follows. First, the combination of high elderly poverty rate, low level of elderly welfare spending and low level of life satisfaction were found to be causal conditions of exceptionally high elderly suicide rate in Korea. However, a contrary combination of causal conditions also acted as factors affecting elderly suicide, indicating that the relationship between socioeconomic factors and elderly suicide may be explained by multiple combinations of causal conditions. In other words, certain socioeconomic condition may bring differing consequences depending on its combination with other conditions. Thus it is important to try to understand the problem of elderly suicide within the unique socioeconomic context of each countries.
